A Brief Music Recommendation

Jonah Kagen

Trying something new this week with a music review. It seems like two months ago, one of Jonah Kagen's songs, Drowning, was in my Apple Music Recommended—yes, I know it's a hot take, but I use Apple Music, not Spotify (because it's better)—but that's a conversation for another day. His music resonated with me and I have probably played his songs hundreds of times over the past couple of months.

Fast forward to two weeks ago, I was shooting a concert for Maisie Peters at the Cambridge Room. That was exciting in itself because I knew her from songs like Favourite Ex and Feels Like This. She was performing her new album You Signed Up For This which will put you in your feels big time. Anyways, the night before the concert I realized that the opening artist was none other than—Jonah Kagen.

I guess you could say I was a little excited. I do my best to only shoot concerts for artists whose music I enjoy, so this was a huge victory to be shooting for two artists whose music I was a massive fan of.

As the stage lit up, Jonah won over the crowd as soon as he walked onto the stage and then smashed his set from start to finish. 10/10 would go see him in concert again. Crazily, it was his first tour, but he had so much charisma on stage that no one would have suspected it if he hadn't said so. As his set came to an end he announced that his new single, Turbulence, was dropping that night.

Turbulence is an amazing song—add it to your sad boi or girl playlists. But, if I were to rank my top five songs of his they would be as follows:

  1. Broken
  2. Moon
  3. Drowning
  4. Turbulence
  5. Catching A Dream

Shout-out to Moon. Even though I have it at #2 it is so good on a late-night drive with the windows down. Each of his songs does an amazing job of telling a story as his rhyme and wordplay pull the listener in as the best artists do. I really can't wait to see what this guy puts out next (hopefully an album soon).

Well, that's it for this week—short and sweet—go check out his music and let me know what you think!

I'll be in College Station with Surfaces this weekend! Pull up to Island Party if you can!

Shoot with Luke

By Luke Montgomery January 26, 2024
Wow. It's been 7 months since I posted on Instagram. I stepped away early in the summer because I realized that God had a lot of work to do in my life. So, I turned my gaze inward and began a spiritual battle that had needed to be addressed for a long time. I will probably share more about that process in the future, but right now, I am still healing and the Lord is still moving in my life—I don't want to hinder any of that with my own words at the moment.

That being said, the story of Luke Montgomery Media has reached its end. I got into this industry to shoot for Ben Rector and I did that. Along the way, God changed my heart for why I am in this industry in the first place. I started because of what it could do for me, but I'm here now because of what I can do for Him. The next step in that process is removing my name from my work, and I could not be more excited about it. I'm so excited to be launching my new company and publication: Ellium's Spot!

I'd like to pick apart this statement piece by piece starting with "I'd rather worship God." To that, I say Amen! Someone put that on a t-shirt and I'll wear it! Literally, anything could come before that sentence and I would agree. "I'd rather worship God." Let that be how I live my life for the rest of my days here on earth.
